August 12, 2011 – Work plan for the water towers adopted by the National Water Towers Management Committee

The National Water Towers Management Committee adopted the first work plan for the Water Towers Conservation Fund, following a two-day workshop held on 11-12 August.  The work plan lays out the key activities to be implemented in 2011-2012 towards achieving the strategic objectives of the Fund. 

These are:

  1. To raise the profile of the water towers, as national assets that are pivotal to achieving Vision 2030 and the national aspirations as embodied in the Constitution;
  2. To promote ecosystem-wide management approaches by supporting cross-sectoral interventions in a coordinated manner;
  3. To ensure that investments in the water towers are sufficient to secure their values;
  4. To respond to the conservation needs of national and local, public and private stakeholders;
  5. To support innovative approaches and interventions, including sustainable financing schemes, public-private partnerships and incentives to involve stakeholders in rehabilitation and conservation of the water towers; and,
  6. To establish synergies with priority national development programmes and projects and other relevant funds.

The work plan activities will be implemented with an initial financial contribution from the Government of KES 50 million.

The geographical scope of the Fund are the water towers, comprising the five main water towers, Mt. Kenya, Aberdares Range, Cherangani Hills, Mau Forests Complex and Mt. Elgon, as well as the other water towers, such as Chyulu, Marsabit, Loima, Kirisia.
