World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) - Kenya Country Office (KCO) signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Forest Service to assist in the rehabilitation process of Transmara Forest Reserve.

Under this collaboration agreement, WWF-KCO undertakes to mobilize funds and resources required for the development of a Participatory Management Plan for Transmara Forest Reserve as well as to assist local Community Forest Associations (CFA) in the implementation of annual workplans as prescribed in the Participatory Management Plan.

The signing of this MoU is part of the forest adoption programme that the Interim Coordinating Secretariat launched in early 2010 to secure the support of the private sector, NGOs and other Kenyan stakeholders to the rehabilitation of the Mau forest ecosystem.  The forest adoption programme has been designed to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife and the support provided by development partners.

Partners in the forest adoption programme include to date:

  • African Wildlife Foundation.  The Foundation adopted Enderit Block (5,440 hectares), Eastern Mau Forest Reserve;
  • Malaika Ecotourism & Coral Cay Conservation UK. They adopted Southern Mau Forest Reserve (136 hectares);
