August 10, 2010 – Ogiek Council of Elders held its first training
The Ogiek Council of Elders that was established in April 2010 held its first two-day training workshop in Nakuru on 10-11 August 2010. The workshop was organized by the Ogiek People’s Development Programme in consultation with the Committee on Ogiek Matters with support from the International Work Group for Indigenous Persons (IWGIA) and the Interim Coordinating Secretariat.
Entitled “Understanding the Mau Task Force Report and the Forest Act, 2005”, the workshop aimed at building the understanding and knowledge of the sixty-member Ogiek Council of Elders on the findings and recommendations of the Mau Task Force as well as the provisions of the new Forest Act (2005).
The overall purpose of the workshop is to ensure that the Ogiek, a minority forest-dwelling community, is provided with the necessary capacity to participate, as other communities, in decision-making processes that will determine their future.
