June 18, 2010 – The Ogiek Council of Elders held its first meeting and launched the Ogiek register process
first_ogiek_council_meetingToday, the Ogiek Council of Elders held its first meeting in Nakuru to start addressing the Ogiek community concerns.  The event was marked by the adoption of the methodology to establish an Ogiek register.  Such register will help strengthen the identity of the Ogiek community and assist in planning for their livelihood development. 

The register process will start on 22 June 2010 with the training of 24 registration clerks and 11 supervisors from the Ogiek community. The registration will start few days after...

During the meeting, Mr. Joseph Towett, Chairman of the Ogiek Council of Elders, reported on the work of the ICS Committeefirst_ogiek_council_meeting2 on Ogiek Matters where the Council is represented by seven of its members. The Committee held four meetings during which it prepared a tentative work programme and a budget, developed the methodology for the Ogiek register and met with development partners, including the French Development Agency towards identifying areas of potential support. The meeting was also attended by the Rift Valley Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Regional Commissioners, eleven District Commissioners and 15 District Officers from the areas where Ogiek are known to reside.  The Provincial Administration expressed their full support to the Ogiek registration process.
