Kenya’s closed canopy forest cover currently stands at approx. 1.7 percent of the country total land area. This is low compared to other African countries with an average of 9.3 percent and the world with an average of 21.4 percent. Most of the closed canopy forests in Kenya are montane forests and are the nation’s water towers. Among the most important is the Mau Forests Complex.

Get involved "Save Mau"As a citizen:
- Participate in the “Save Mau” campaign by supporting the planting of trees. You can do it from anywhere at any time… Just send a SMS to 5254.
- Discuss the urgent matter of forest conservation with your neighbors, colleagues and friends. Draw their attention to what they can do to help save our forests.
- Express your support to the conservation of the Mau to your leaders and through the media. Forest conservation is critical to all of us, and to you. Don’t remain silent, you are a stakeholder.
- Be a wise customer. Some of the products in the market, in particular Cedar post and charcoal, are often illegally poached from our remaining forests, including the Mau. Purchase alternative products, such as treated gum posts or carbonized briquettes that have no impact on our forests. By doing so, you will also promote innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Beyond the Mau, many forests in Kenya are degraded. They also need your attention and support. Give a courtesy call to the forester in charge of the forest nearest to your place. Organize with your neighbors and friends a tour of the forest with the local forester. Discuss with the forester the issues affecting the forest and start building a momentum towards the rehabilitation and conservation of your forest.
As a corporation:
- Include and discuss environment and forest conservation in your regular meetings. Draw to the attention of your staff the various actions they can take on an individual basis, as a Kenyan citizen. Discuss also how they can be involved, as a corporation, in the conservation of our environment and our forests. As a corporation, you are an agent of development. Let it be sustainable.
- Join the increasing number of corporations which are supporting the rehabilitation and conservation efforts in the Mau. Support and participate in the Mau Rehabilitation Trust Fund. For more information, contact the Interim Coordinating Secretariat.
As a school:
- Schools are shaping the future generation of leaders, CEOs, farmers, traders, workers, consumers of the Nation. They have a major responsibility in promoting sound management of our environment, in particular our forests.
- Apply good environment practices in the management of the school compound. Collect rain water… Establish tree nurseries… Plant many trees on the compound… Avoid soil erosion by preventing overgrazing… Reduce firewood consumption through the use of institutional improved stoves. Get the children involved in these activities and the management their compound.
- Sensitize the children to the beauty of nature. Bring them to the neighboring forest… Organize visits to the closest national parks. Contact the nearest KFS forester or KWS warden.
As a diplomat:
- As a diplomat, you are a resident of Kenya. In your individual capacity, you can do at least as much as any Kenyan citizen.
- Within your mission, highlight the importance of forest conservation in Kenya and the efforts by the Government of Kenya to rehabilitate and conserve forests, in particular the Mau.
- Bring to the attention of your colleagues in the mission and in your capital, the joint call by UNEP and the Government of Kenya for support to the rehabilitation and conservation of the Mau forest ecosystem. Share and discuss with your colleagues the Mau Concept Proposal and the Mau Programme Document (downloadable from this site).
As a journalist:
- Your words are read or listen to by many Kenyans. A healthy debate on national environmental matters, such as the Mau, requires factual information to be brought forward. You have a pivotal role in sharing such factual information that can enable people care for our environment and our forests.
- Your words will be even more convincing if they derive from personal experience. Be involved in environment conservation, in particular forest rehabilitation and conservation.Gw
